Injectable Anti-Aging Regimens

(Botox® and Dermal Fillers)

In 2009, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported over 2.6 million patients had Botox® injections, while approximately 1.5 million patients received dermal filler injections. These numbers have also increased by half a million each since 2008.  Needless to say, injectables are the preferred choice for fighting the signs of aging, so which is right for you?  The following overview highlights the differences between Botox®, Juvederm®, Radiesse™, and Sculptra®.

Botox® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxin A), manufactured by Allergan, is a sterile, vacuum-dried, purified, botulinum toxin type A intramuscular injection acting as an acetylcholine (ACH) blocker to reduce muscle activity.  By so doing, it temporarily removes the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar facial lines   (the “l l” lines between brows), crow’s feet, and forehead wringkles in adults eighteen to sixty-five years of age.  Results appear as soon as three days and continue to improve over 10-14 days by dramatically reducing appearance of fine lines and wrinkling. Results typically last up to four months. The typical Botox treatment consists of three areas including crow’s feet (around the eyes), forehead lines, and between the brows, with a cost of $675 for all three areas. For only two areas the cost is $540 while one area is only $350. For special treatment areas such as chin dimpling, gummy smiles, and bunny nose wrinkles, the cost is $75 for each.

Juvederm® is also manufactured by Allergan . Juvederm is used as a filler in fine lines, wrinkles on several areas of the face, such as the lines around the mouth, plumps the lips, fills marionette lines, and rejuvenate the skin.  Juvederm® is a dermal filler composed of a hyaluronic acid-based gel to compensate for reduced collagen levels and skin elasticity.  Because hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in the body, Juvederm® comes with minimal side effects.  The cost for Juvederm® is about $595.

Radiesse™, manufactured by BioForm Medical, Inc., is another type of filler composed of a synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite (nonsynthetic calcium hydroxylapatite is the primary mineral constituent of bone and teeth).  It corrects more moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds by adding contour. Other uses are for cheek enhancement, and the recontouring of the chin and jaw.  Because the microspheres plump the skin and stimulate collagen synthesis, Radiesse™ offers the longer lasting results up to one year. There is also more of the product per pre-filled syringe costing around $650.

Sculptra®, manufactured by Dermik Laboratories, Inc., is a facial injectable of poly-L-lactic acid.  It is used to correct shallow to deep nasolabial folds as well as contour facial deficiencies and correct facial atrophy which occurs with age and weight loss. This products purpose is not just for filling but to stimulate and replace collagen lost from aging.  It lasts for several yearsafter 2-3 treatments, depending on the person. The cost is about $850 per vial.

When comparing the above injectables, the key difference to remember is that Botox® is not a dermal filler, but more for use of preventing hyperactivity of key muscles which can cause wrinkling in the area mentioned earlier. Dermal fillers do just that, they fill in the lines, depressions and spaces of the skin while giving contour and amazing results. By combining Botox with any of these fillers, you can achieve optimal results and prevent further wrinkling with consistent use.
